Getting married in Cambodia

Armand

Hi all,

We invite all the ones who got married in Cambodia or who are about to get married in Cambodia to participate in this thread :)

What are the formalities to get married in Cambodia? Is it the same for a couple of foreigners of for a mixed couple (between a foreigner and a native of Cambodia)?

Are the procedures complicated?

How long does it take to carry out all the formalities?

Thank you in advance for participating,

Armand

Hi...I also want to know..how will 2 foreigners ( USA and Philippines) get married here without going back home...

Thank you

DICKPETERS

Best Simple advice is DO IT IN THAILAND or VIETNAM. With the necessary "permission" required from the Cambodian forein ministry and the other paper work involved, it's much much simpler (3-4 days) in the countries mentioned. You just need a certificate (from your embassy) that you are single/divorce document and a passport, Same for her.

Hope this helps. Am doing the same in 3 months!

Anyone have info on western woman and Khmer man marriage / visa regulations?

I myself will be beginning the process of marrying my Khmer fianc茅e of 2 years soon, the below information is up to date, I am not sure of the exact prices for everything yet as information is hard to obtain here, but from friends who have married here I understand that it is not cheap and could end up costing a couple thousand dollars (without the wedding). Some people have a local wedding ceremony, but don't go through the legal process (many over 50's seem to be doing this due to the age restriction on foreigners marrying a Khmer woman).   Legal Require颅ments for Get颅ting Mar颅ried in Cambodia

Allot颅ted time:

Allow at least 31聳52 days from arrival in Cam颅bo颅dia to wed颅ding date to process paper颅work (21 days of res颅i颅dency, 10 days before a wed颅ding cer颅e颅mony can pro颅ceed and an addi颅tional 3 weeks to post Inten颅tion to Marry, unless a Cer颅tifi颅cate of No Imped颅i颅ment has been obtained pre颅vi颅ously in your home coun颅try). We rec颅om颅mend giv颅ing your颅self more time due to prepa颅ra颅tion, week颅ends, hol颅i颅days or unex颅pected delays.

Nec颅es颅sary legal documents:

Please note that all doc颅u颅ments must be sub颅mit颅ted in Cam颅bo颅dian (Khmer) or Eng颅lish. Con颅tact the Embassy in your home coun颅try or your Embassy in Cam颅bo颅dia for an autho颅rized trans颅la颅tor.  If your doc颅u颅ments are trans颅lated, be pre颅pared to sub颅mit the orig颅i颅nal copies in your native lan颅guage for ver颅i颅fi颅ca颅tion as well as the trans颅lated version.
聲Cer颅ti颅fied copy of birth certificates
聲Valid Pass颅ports and cer颅ti颅fied copies (obtained from your Embassy in Cam颅bo颅dia or the Cam颅bo颅dian Embassy in your res颅i颅dent country)
聲Visas and photocopies
聲Cer颅tifi颅cate of No Impediment*/Affidavit of Sin颅gle Status
聲Affi颅davit of Mar颅riage (sworn at the Civil Reg颅istry Office in Cam颅bo颅dia before the Con颅sol or Vice-Consol)
聲Crim颅i颅nal Records
聲Cer颅tifi颅cate on Pro颅fes颅sion (show颅ing monthly income)
聲Divorce or death cer颅tifi颅cates, if applicable
聲Med颅ical Cer颅tifi颅cate from Cal颅mette Hos颅pi颅tal in Phnom Penh
聲Mar颅riage Appli颅ca颅tion Form (a sim颅i颅lar form exists for two for颅eign颅ers apply颅ing for mar颅riage in Cam颅bo颅dia): A writ颅ten request for mar颅riage appli颅ca颅tions must be sent to the Min颅istry of For颅eign Affairs. You will need to know the area or province that you plan to marry. The appli颅ca颅tion lists sup颅port颅ing doc颅u颅ments that must be attached to the appli颅ca颅tion. Some of these doc颅u颅ments may need to be legal颅ized at the couple聮s Embassy in Cam颅bo颅dia or prior to leav颅ing at the Cam颅bo颅dian Embassy in your res颅i颅dent coun颅try. Upon approval of the bride and groom聮s appli颅ca颅tion, the appli颅ca颅tion must then be sub颅mit颅ted to the Civil Registrar.

Legal require颅ments to get mar颅ried:
聲Cer颅e颅mony (Civil/Religious)

Civil and reli颅gious wed颅dings are legally rec颅og颅nized wed颅dings pre颅formed in Cam颅bo颅dia. The cer颅e颅mony is pre颅formed in Cam颅bo颅dian. If either party does not speak Cam颅bo颅dian,
an inter颅preter should be hired.
聲Age and Relation

The bride must be at least 18 years of age. The groom must be at least 20 years of age. They can颅not be related by blood, mar颅riage or adoption.

Note: Non-Cambodian Male Cit颅i颅zens plan颅ning to marry a Cam颅bo颅dian woman must be no older than 50 years of age, with a monthly income that gen颅er颅ates a min颅i颅mum of USD $2,500.
声奥颈迟颅苍别蝉蝉别蝉

Two wit颅nesses over 18 years of age must be present for the cer颅e颅mony and pro颅vide their passports.
声搁别驳颅颈蝉迟谤测

Both par颅ties must stay within the dis颅trict of their Embassy or Con颅sulate in Cam颅bo颅dia for 21 days prior to fil颅ing a Notice of Inten颅tion to Marry. We rec颅om颅mend mak颅ing an appoint颅ment in advance with the Con颅sol or Vice-Consol, to be assured that you can deliver, in per颅son, your oath of inten颅tion to marry upon the com颅ple颅tion of your 21 day res颅i颅dency (this does not include the day you arrived).

Note: Take all paper颅work and pho颅to颅copies of each to your Embassy and Civil Reg颅istry Office in Cambodia.

At least 10 days prior to the wed颅ding and 21 full days since your arrival in Cam颅bo颅dia, you will need to file your Notice of Inten颅tion to Marry with the Civil Reg颅istry Office. You will need to know where you will marry and who you plan to use as your mar颅riage offi颅cer. Here, you will also com颅plete and sign an Affi颅davit of Mar颅riage.

Finally the Notice of Inten颅tion to Marry will be posted, at the Con颅sulate, for 3 weeks. Pend颅ing objec颅tions, your Embassy can pro颅vide you with a Let颅ter of No Imped颅i颅ment to Mar颅riage. Bride and groom will show pass颅ports and/or divorce or death certificates.

British Cit颅i颅zens can shorten their wait颅ing period by apply颅ing for a Super颅in颅ten颅dent Cer颅tifi颅cate of No Imped颅i颅ment prior to leav颅ing for Cam颅bo颅dia. You would apply at the Reg颅is颅trar in your res颅i颅dent dis颅trict of the United Kingdom.

Mar颅riage certificate:
聲Wed颅dings must be reg颅is颅tered with the Civil Reg颅istry Office in order to be rec颅og颅nized. Offi颅cers can come to your wed颅ding to sign doc颅u颅men颅ta颅tion. The new颅ly颅weds will give their thumbprints to reg颅is颅ter and receive their Mar颅riage Certificate.
聲Mar颅riage Cer颅tifi颅cates are issued from the Cheif of Com颅mune, from the region in which the wed颅ding cer颅e颅mony takes place.

*A Cer颅tifi颅cate of No Imped颅i颅ment, is also known as a Sin颅gle Sta颅tus Affi颅davit, Sin颅gle Sta颅tus Statu颅tory Dec颅la颅ra颅tion, Cer颅tifi颅cate of No Record,  a Cer颅tifi颅cate of Legal Capac颅ity to Con颅tract Mar颅riage, Cer颅tifi颅cate of Nulla Osta or a Cer颅tifi颅cate de cou颅tume (plus an MP2A form).

Hi! I am a filipino living in Cambodia, I have been separated from husband for 5yearsa can i file my divorce paper here for my husband since no divorce granted in our country. Any help please thanks.

brolindevine

I am going through this process right now in 2018. the information Rarky has posted is very good info and generally what is still required in 2018. But. The one thing I'm finding is that people don't necessarily go by the book. I read the rules, got all the documents. On the website of the minister of foreign affairs it says "5 days" for the first step when you post the initial application but when we got to that step they told us 3 weeks (i already had my statement in leu of certificate of non-impedement from my embassy), but if we pay them $300 it will take 1 day.

In Cambodia, if you don't have a long time that you are able to wait, be prepared to grease some palms.

Hello everybody,

I have a query that want to ask , if anyone can help will be really appreciated.

I am a Canadian citizen and I am engaged with Cambodian girl .聽 We are planning to get married in May this year .聽
So as I was researching the process , it鈥檚 says that I have to stay 21 days in Cambodia before can apply for marriage certificate..
now my question is , are those 21 days should be consecutive days .
I have been to Cambodia two times for total of 17 days ...聽 聽so will this be counted or not ??

Thanks
Gautam

Hello.

Although I don't understand the story (you have only met her during 17 days in total and want to marry her?) (or does she also live in Canada?) I will answer to the original question.

You (and her) have to be present in Cambodia during the process of getting permission to marry. That could easily take up 3 weeks so the period of 21 days is probably meant to have you stay previous to the marriage.

Hope this helps.

Hi Joe,

I have a few questions of my own.

I鈥檓 a UK citizen and I will be (hopefully) marrying my cambodian boyfriend this summer. We both live in Thailand together and will be going to Cambodia for a month to sort out our paper work (we鈥檝e technically already had the wedding).

1. Is the waiting time 21 days before or after I sign my affidavit at the British embassy?
2. I鈥檒l be getting my superintendent registrar certificate when I go back to the uk in April - does this speed up the 21 days waiting time?
3. Whilst I鈥檓 waiting 21 days, can I prepare other areas of the marriage procedure, such as going to get the health certificate and filling out the marriage application at the ministry of affairs?
4. I will get a 30 visa to visit Cambodia - I know recently the聽 visa rules have changed, will I be able to extend my 30 day visa if needed to complete the wedding procedure?
5. Can I just pay extra to get the whole thing done quicker?

Much thanks!

Nicole

Hello Nicole.

This was posted before and it indicates that you need at least 52 days before marriage.

"Allow at least 31鈥52 days from arrival in Cam颅bo颅dia to wed颅ding date to process paper颅work (21 days of res颅i颅dency, 10 days before a wed颅ding cer颅e颅mony can pro颅ceed and an addi颅tional 3 weeks to post Inten颅tion to Marry, unless a Cer颅tifi颅cate of No Imped颅i颅ment has been obtained pre颅vi颅ously in your home coun颅try). We rec颅om颅mend giv颅ing your颅self more time due to prepa颅ra颅tion, week颅ends, hol颅i颅days or unex颅pected delays."

You can do things while waiting, medical certificate at Calamette hospital. Your boyfriend also has to get documents which he can apply for at the commune chief or sangkat.

Prepare everything you can get from UK, don't wait til you're in Cambodia.

You can come in on a tourist visa, valid 30 days, which can one time be extended with another 30 days.
If you want to be sure, come in on an Ordinary visa and extend it for 6 months with an EG extension of stay, applying you are searching for a job as a teacher.

Hope this helps.

Good luck.

This is such an easy thing to handle. Are you one of the person who is getting married? If yes, you can do it. However, sooner or later both parties must be present to sign the document of marriage.
