I have heard Arequipa is the place to live in Peru. There has been a massive influx of refugees from the African continent in Europe, Spain , Italy, France, and personally would not even visit those places. I prefer a country setting well outside of the big city. If you can afford it buy yourself a parcel of land and have a house built on it. You can find nice areas in the big cities here. Homes similar to what you would find in the United States. Good luck

Arequipa 100%, Trujillo is a big city with a small town mentality. The resturants are not great, things are closed all the time, etc. Arequipa on the other hand is stunning. It give Greece vibes, the food is incredible. It truly is a special place.

It has to be Arequipa. There is so much to see. A bus tour will give you a good insight into the various districts and also visit some good historical parts of the city. The food in Peru is world famous - I agree with your assessment of the food in Spain!

Hotels in Arequipa range from cheap hostels to the almost outrageous at $450 - 500 per night and breakfast is extra. We are visiting Arequipa again in a few weeks and always look forward to our visits.

Oh,  sorry, almost forgot, I am also 70, british and have lived in Lima for the past 10 years and still loving it - almost - I can still be surprised by some of the driving ’skill’ on display here!

Thanks for the quick reply! Arequipa it is... by the way, I haven't been to Peru since 2013 and the wife not since 2000 so  any suggestions for a group of 6 dinner at a good Peruvian restaurant in Lima? Not looking for Michelin, but I remember Brujas del Cachiche, any other?

I like Arequipa Culture slightly better, but Trujillo for business unless you are focused on Tourism.  @sivera01  Food is amazing at either but different.  Arequipa is big city as is Trujillo.  If I had no issues with possibly needing to make money, and where family is I would pick Arequipa.  My wife has family in both area's and my preference is Trujillo because of the business availability with that part of her family.  There are great restaurants at both, and I have not had issues with being surprised with closings, however its been a few months since I have been there.  Heading back to both cities in a few weeks.   For an EXCELLENT experience, of which there are many in Lima, may I suggest OSAKA's  for an excellent peruvian japanese fusion.  One of my best experiences every in any country.
