Yes it's needed. You need to get a private health insurance such as Fidelidade, Allianz, Medis, or whatever will cover you in Portugal in case you get sick.

I have Fidelidade which allows me to see a doctor very quickly and get all the necessary exams at reduced prices in private hospitals with the latest technology and doctors who speak English perfectly.. If you go through the public health care, you can wait a very long time and won't get a family doctor because there is a shortage. I see the very long lines on the streets every day (often under the rain) it's ridiculous. I the meantime, your condition could get worse. Of course, the premium you will pay depends on your age. The younger you are, the cheaper it is.

I feel more secure to have this private health insurance just in case.

You mean the public health care system ? It's not that it's bad, it's that you have to wait for a very long time and stand in line. There are not enough doctors in the public sector.
