Tax Accountant - NHR

Shuffleboard243

Hi - anyone have a recommendation for a good tax accountant to help fill in my Portuguese tax return?  I’m NHR from July last year, moved from UK.  Took a look at the tax authority website today and it’s mighty confusing.  Thanks

Maybe take a second look and it might already be less confusing. If your tax situation is somewhat complicated then I can recommend BDO in Lisbon. I used their services many years ago.

@Shuffleboard243,

Welcome.

If you're NHR, you'll have to fill in Annex L in your IRS tax statement (from 1 april to 30 june).

You have some support here:

You have this PDF (which is from 2022) but which may also help you too:

You can translate PDF/DOC formats into English using a Doctranslator, such as:

Remember that you should always do the simulation (click "Simular" button) before submitting it.

Interestingly, the Simular never worked for me. It always returned a message that this isn't applicable to our case.

You're probably right, because the NHR has a flat tax rate and you can't deduct expenses. I use it a lot and it's very useful... there are various options for aggregating income, some more favourable than others.

Zeev Fisher from Fresh Portugal is really knowledgeable.

For me neither: the SIMULAR button works if you neither have any income from outside of Portugal nor invoke the NHR status by adding and filling in Annex L (the pop-up message will tell you so). In general, I have found filing a tax return online relatively simple (compared to the process in the US, for instance): each line on every form is thoroughly explained; when in doubt, the text could be translated either word-for-word or through any online translation means available (Google Translate now has European Portugues in addition to the Brazilian variety). If, when you have filed and printed out the Proof of Filing (PROVA DE ENTREGA), you happen to find an error, you can correct it and re-file again. Even after your tax return has been accepted by Finanças (and PROVA DE ENTREGA becomes COMPROVATIVO), you can still file the same tax return anew. Just try to do the initial tax return within the filing period, i.e., April through June.
