Need for information on colleges..

mrLan

Hi forum members,
I'm from Turkey (non-EU). Me and my family are considering moving to Malta within a few months regarding to a new job I've already accepted in Malta.

I'm kind of getting my questions anwered one by one, by the help of kind forum members.
(/forum/viewtopic.p … 69#2618786)

Now I need one more information please. Everytime I try to make a search on public/state primary schools (unpaid) in Malta, it results as college list. In my homeland colleges stand for private (paid) schools. So I'm a bit confused about this.

Would anyone please inform me about colleges in Malta? Are colleges paid or unpaid? And as far as I can see, a single college may be spread into different cities/towns or campuses, which I wonder why.

I would really pleased to hear about colleges and public primary school system of Malta.

Best Regards,

Hello mrLan,

as I know, primary and secondary schools in Malta are organized in colleges. Yes, college in Malta does not mean a tertiary education institution. One college can have a dozen of schools in different areas of Malta, most of them will be primary, and a couple of secondary ones. Public colleges are free, except for small fee (approx. 500 EUR annually, may be a bit less or more) for non-EU persons.

Hello dvin,
Thanks for your reply.

Before writing an answer, I was trying to reach  local authorities about the situation. The most acceptable answer came from my future company's hr department. They managed to provide some information with regards to my questions.

Her answer is as follows, in order to help for some in the same situation.

"Ms Josette White indicated that the 6 week course in Maltese and English will begin in October; this is held in tandem with normal lessons. Children will be able to communicate instinctively with their peers. Also allowing for those 6 weeks which should speed up their language learning. With regard to school fees, these are Eur156.07 per child per term. There are 3 terms in a school year, therefore the fees would amount to: Eur 468.21 per child per year. "

Hi can some one please help we are thinking of moving to Malta, we have a four year old due to start school in England this September. How do I find the best school for her in Malta and enroll her in an English speaking school, what areas are the schools in are they state or private, the areas we know are buggiba, Meliha and quara, also does any one miss England and wish they had never moved and wanting to return to England, sorry these questions may seem strange but it's a big step moving to another part of the world and I have so many questions I don't know where to start

Hi Claire,

don't worry basically everyone has the same thought before relocating to an other country:)

Nearly all Maltese towns have their own primary schools, which are organised in colleges and each college has at least one secondary school. Children are enrolled to schools according to their address, so if you want to choose a state school you have to live in that town to be able to register your child there. Qawra and Bugibba belong to St Paul's Bay School which is the largest in Malta and has one of the highest percentage of foreign students, so English is widely used, but of course Maltese taught as well. If you opt for a private school ( Maltese is not compulsory), you can choose whichever you want as long as they will have an opening for your child. Locations and price range are various. They also provide pick up service for an extra fee. Good luck!
