Dual US/Irish Citizen looking to find work/move to Ireland

Smitty26

Hello!  I am a dual citizen and realize that I don't need work permits to work in Ireland.  I'm wondering if anyone can recommend the best way to look for work in Ireland from abroad.  Is it possible to find work if you aren't transferring with a company?  I have done research on so many things when it comes to moving requirements, etc., but this is a tricky area.  I would love any tips/pointers/suggestions anyone may have.

Thanks!

Michele

Hi and welcome to the Forum.

As an Irish citizen, there are no restrictions on you living and working anywhere in the EU.  However, getting work long-distance is not easy; especially if you're not in a skill set that people are screaming out for (doctor, engineer etc).

The fact is that unskilled work is in the main satisfied by the local population and other EU citizens; they're pretty much the type of job where they want you to start tomorrow morning and the moment they realise that you live over 3,000 miles away, they will start to lose interest in you.

So, I always look at it in this way; to get a decent job (anywhere), you need:

Relevant experience
Relevant qualifications
Speak the local language
Luck

The first place to check is the EURES website; this will take you there.  After that, probably best if you speak to any of the job agencies in Ireland that deal with your speciality; Google will help you find them.

After checking out the link, if you have any further specific questions, please come back to us.

Hope this helps.
