Anyone in or close to Yuper?

knobworx

Hi my wife and I have just bought a house in Yuper and we are set to fly out from the UK for a month in a couple of weeks.

Our friends have had a property in BG in the next village for many years and will be a great help for us to show us the ropes so to speak.

We are incredibly excited to get started on our journey (and also terrified at the same time) we are currently trying to learn a little of the language too.

We have Sooo many questions about things that we just take for granted in the UK- For instance, what do we do with garden waste such as grass cuttings, leaves etc? When we get there we have a lot of garden work to do and as a result will have loads of garden waste like leaves, grass, vines once we have cut it  and maybe the old hay / straw from the hay loft if there is any.

When driving around the village on Google Maps I have noticed a few Right hand drive cars so maybe there are a couple of ex-pats already there?

Anyhow many thanks in advance for any help, much appreciated.

Mike

Welcome!

It's not uncommon for Bulgarians working, or with friends living, in the UK to import RHD vehicles. They're also often in no rush to register them once they're here...  😎

IIWY, I'd compost the grass etc - it'll come in handy; Lidl regularly sell the plastic compost bins or you can always knock one up easily enough

@JimJ

Composting isn't really an option for us as we will be in and out of the country month in month out type of thing. We will be going down the route of very low maintenance garden areas to make life easier and keep on top of.

I'm wary of composting bins and attracting vermin / rats etc.

Good luck with your Bulgarian adventure!

I would go with composting your garden waste, as @JimJ suggested. Composting only attracts rodents if you include food waste. Piles of sticks might attract snakes, so unless you want snakes to eat the rodents, do avoid that near your house or areas where you'll be sitting outdoors.

What I did was just stack it all up in an out-of-the-way part of the garden, give it a good soak with water, and let it rot down. The first autumn at our house (not permanently lived in yet) I created a pile taller than me of weeds and twigs and leaves. When I went back in spring it was 6" high! No mess, no smell, no work, no unwanted critters.

It's amazing how fast the grass and weeds grow in Bulgaria, and if like us at present while we wait for our D visia you're only visiting once a month,  disposing of the garden waste will be an ongoing issue. Composting it will make life easier for you! If you don't like the look of the plastic bins, you can buy square wooden ones.

Alternatively the village might have an official area where clean waste can be deposited. You'd want to check with the mayor's office first to ensure you weren't accidentally fly-tipping on someone else's land!
