I've been living in QN for over two years. It's been a fairly sleepy neck of the woods. But in the past year and a half the real estate market has gone crazy and there's been some major investment going into the city. And with that investment comes nicer facilities and higher prices.

Since it's a little out of the way place most of the expats are just passing through.听 Some stop for a few months to teach,听 but then move on. There is a pretty steady collection of about 20-25 that can be seen about town.

Are you planning a visit here? If you like the sea and the mountains with mild winters and sunny summers then definitely pay us a visit.

Mark, I have a specific question please - given the close proximity of the mountains are there any good (3-4 hour, 10-15km) hiking trails in these mountains? Regards, FforestFach

There are quite a few mountains for climbing around the area.听 In fact,听 one of my 8th grade student's parents has a hiking club every Sunday morning. The downside is no one speaks English.

How is the English Teaching job market in Quy Nhon? is it easy to pick up around 15 teaching hours a week ?听 I am qualified and have 5 years teaching experience. I currently work at one of the Top centers in Da Nang....

I'm considering passing through there maybe later this year or early next year, may end up staying for a while.

The first questions is always going to be if you have a diploma, an ESL type teaching certificate and your criminal background check all appropriately stamped and certified in VN. If you got the big 3 then getting a job is fairly easy. You'll find some of the same big city BS so always cross your t's and dot you i's on your contract. It might be worth your while to check out some of the Language Centers around town and see what's happening. There are a few backpackers here so there is a bit of a transient teaching crowd and some centers are always looking for certified help.

If you can hold off your visit until after Tet the weather usually starts to clear and temperatures perk up a bit into the 30+ range.

Maps seem to use both spellings Quy Nhon and Qui Nhon.听 Just curious which spelling seems to be used locally.

There is no general consensus on which spelling is correct because I've seen it spelled both ways on the internet and around the city.听 Even government building have it spelled both ways.听 And since the y and i have the same pronunciation they seem relatively interchangeable

Hi..I'm planning a trip early in the new year to quy Nhon Da Nang and Hue. Looking for retirement 6 months of the year. Is Quy Nhon relatively inexpensive $500/ mo decent apartment central location? Thanks

The cost of living in QN is the least expensive of the three places you mentioned. I know some expats that rent housing for between 5-7 million VND a month and apartments for about 3-4 million a month. The challenge here is finding a place. With that said there is a tremendous amount of new construction around the city so depending on when you arrive the rental supply should improve dramatically in the years to come. If you consider the cost and quality of food in your monthly expenses then QN is a very good value for the money

Where in Quy Nhon can I get a map of the city?
Where can I buy a real cup of coffee ?
Can you recommend a trustworthy place to rent a scooter that has insurance coverage?

I use Google Maps when needed. That's the closest and most up to date of current city roadways

If you don't like Ca Phe Sua or Ca Phe Den then you are pretty limited unless you visit Highlands Coffee

I have found the Highland place and it is about the only coffee shop so far that I know of where
I can get a plain, simple cup of black coffee --- without ice.... without milk .... and sometimes in a cup, sometimes full.

I have Google maps - I have found them to be a lot of trouble and a little help - since they don't
have streets and places necessarily accurately placed, but it is something.

For those who relate to a paper maps, I got one at the book store at the plaza on T. Nguyen Tai Thanh where the KFC and Trade Center shop are.
It does not have all the small streets but it is something you can mark your places on.

Talked to Reece at the Sportsman's bar.听 Renting a piece of junk old Honda right now but I will get back to Reece when I am ready to rent a better machine long-term.

My experience is that the words c脿 ph锚 n贸ng, kh么ng 膽瓢峄漬g will get you black hot coffee with no sugar anywhere in Vietnam.听 The third word which means "hot", despite the spelling seems to be pronounced something like "naum."听 The last two words quite literally mean "no sugar."听 If you want no sugar, no sweetened cream is assumed.

Yeah, found the KFC. But I still get lost in Quy Nhon - twice today.

If you are getting lost in Quy Nhon , may I suggest that you avoid HCMC at all costs.听 听听

How did your search for black coffee with no cream or sugar go?听 I forgot to mention that the "o" in 膽瓢峄漬g (sugar) is somewhat silent or maybe even doubled to the oo sound at least to western ears, although I am sure it is heard clearly by any Vietnamese.听 Using English spelling conventions, It might be described as "doong" rather than "dung."听 Of course this goes back to why Vietnamese don't understand their own language when we speak it as we generally mess it up.听 听

Went there with friends; someone knows someone who might have a place to rent to me.

I do get lost in Quy Nhon: I find the Google maps on my phone give me too small a picture and
do not give the names of all the streets. My paper map of Q, N., which works听 a lot better for me,
does not show all the streets.

I seen a post about living costs and it said its possible to live in Vietnam for 12,500,000 VND per month. That would cover all living costs such as rent, bills, phone, gym, socialising, bike rental and groceries. Would that be enough for Quy Nhon, or in fact anywhere?

Depends on your lifestyle, if you are a big drinker and eat out a lot it may cost more. Also depends on you rental cost.

A new question for you.
Do you - or anyone on this forum - know where I can buy cigars in Quy Nhon?

I have done Google searches and found a couple luxury hotels with fine wine and cuban cigars.
I feel inhibited about going to such places because I am too poor.
There was one cigar chop at 18 Hung Low Street that was on the Google map but was not there in reality.

And the online suppliers that I knew of from the U.S.A. do not ship to Vietnam.

This is turning out to be more of a challenge that getting a cup of black coffee.....听 without ice, without sugar, without milk, ....听 without it getting cold while they make me wait for it.

Many coffee shops put the filter and coffee cup in a large bowl of boiling water.听 An improvised bain-marie of sorts.

How would we know unless you specify the type of lifestyle you want to lead?
