20ft shipping container LA to Subic?

Moab762

Planned move to San Fernando, LA Union. Researched shipping my vehicle (2012 Jeep JKU). Best shipping companies appear to be BR or NEX. NEX is by far the most economical. Shipping times are similar. Subic is least busy port of the ones I found. I just need a customs broker on the PH end.

I was surprised that prices were so low. NEX is $500 base price. BR goes up to $2800. Considering my vehicle is just as expensive or slightly more to replace in PH vs US. It's a no brainier. And I have the rest of a 20ft container to fill with other items. This could potentially save me a lot of money.

Reviews of security and hidden fees don't seem as rampant as in decades past. Does anyone have any experience or advice for shipping containers US to PH?

Welcome to the forum Moab762.

While I can't comment on your LA to Subic for a shipping container and cost it does seem extremely low.

The other point is that any decent container shipping companies have forwarders in all destinations, that's their profession.

We moved here over 6 years ago with a container from Brisbane Australia to Manila and their forwarding company freighted the container to our property, unloaded it into the house and studio and took the empty container back to Manila. We are in Bacnotan La Union so a 7 hour drive for that truck and 6 workers, all done in one day and paid for in Australia to the shipping company, there were no port fees, duties nor taxes or any brown paper bags. Seamless and very professional.

My better half dealt with the paperwork with the forwarders in Manila as I was still working in Oz and aside from the long drive down had no complaints.

If you want my shipping company and forwarders details let me know.

Good luck with your move and welcome to the Philippines.

Cheers, Steve.

I'm quite surprised no one has mention the 40% custom fee and a host of  fees & taxes for your vehicle.

To be honest Bob I'm also surprised why one would bother to ship a 13 year old vehicle and go through all the drama as well as an emission test and dealing with the LTO tripe once it's landed.

OMO but better to buy new here and no need to go through those hassles for 3 years as it can be painful and time consuming.

Cheers, Steve.

Sadly, I join Big Pearl & Enzyte Bob on this.

I imagine that that the paperwork involved in registering a US vehicle here would approach thousands of pages of documentation. Nothing is easy when dealing with the government here (they still use carbon paper!!!).

I cant comment on import taxes, but I imagine they will also be imposed.

It is possible the NEX shipping company quoted you a price to ship the container and is leaving the tax liabilities to you. BR may have include the taxes. Measure twice, cut once as they say. Get specifics from both companies!

In 2017 we shipped our household in a 40 foot container, coming in on BB visa. The duty only amounted to about $3K USD  at the Cebu port. Then they loaded the container on another truck and drive to the place we were initially renting in Dumaguete, managing to somehow squeeze everything into the rental house.

Anyway we thought the duty was very reasonable. For the customs inspection in our case it was very light; they say to pack the most valuable items in the front of the container and that would have worked for our inspection. They didn't have us remove articles to see what was in middle and back as they could have.

As far as your 2012 jeep: Always great to meet another Jeep person. I understand how you wish to move it here, a real USA jeep. I had a 2004 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon with ragtop. I did sell it before moving here as I reluctantly decided to part mostly because spare parts would be hard to find here. People who don't own jeeps just don't understand...it's not the money lol. I would have brought it over and gone through all the LTO BS if not for the difficulty of maintaining it, even getting news tires etc.. But as expected, when selling it, the Wrangler kept up its value very well. Maybe in the NCR region the spare parts situation is better than it was here in Dumaguete in 2017. Good for you if you can bring it over!
