Google and online search engines

mikenmanila

How come people go to expat sites to ask the questions that can easily be answered by online search engines like yahoo or Google?

Every topic I have seen posted here has an answer on Google.

If you need answers to an immigration question, simply email Bureau of Immigration, they are very responsive.

For business related answers, contact DTI or BIR.

For buying land or property, just ask google, the laws are very clear.

It is always best to do a little research yourself and get the straight answer than to ask for other people's opinion or how they did it, because every case here in the Philippines is different.

@mikenmanila Hello,

Of course members should do some research first, however by participating on our forum (I am not talking about other websites) they can interact with members who have been through the same process or situation. They benefit from other members' personal experience and gain a fuller and richer understanding of the situation.

They also acquire a greater appreciation of the subtleties in different contexts/situation.

However, official infos from authorities is and should remain members' main/first source of information.

But yes the advice you have given are valid : Do some research + official info.

Yes indeed. I like to think of the two sources of information as complementary. Besides I get far more laughs on this site compared to an impersonal search engine :)

Search Engines like Google should be the first port of call but sometimes you simply cannot get accurate information from them.

For example, I recently looked at the Philippines Bureau of Immigration website regarding the need for a return/onward ticket within 30 days of arrival since the post came up and everybody seemed to be having different experiences. There is nothing on there saying the return or onward ticket needs to be within 30 days of arrival so I emailed them. I gave an example of me wanting to say for about 52 days and asked if I could just book a return ticket to come back after that time or did I need to show an onward ticket to leave within 30 days. The reply I got back said visitors need a 2 way ticket and that was it, no mention of if this was required within 30 days of arrival or not.

Besides that Enzyte Bob will not get his fries supersized by Google.
