Insurance coverage in Cambodia

Kenjee

Hello everyone,

Moving abroad requires adequate insurance coverage.

What type of insurance expatriates need the most in Cambodia: health, house or liability insurance? All of them? Do they come as a package?

Are there other insurance options to consider like critical illness, damage or property insurance?

Is it better to purchase insurance from an expat insurance specialist or from a local insurance provider?

And what about insurance costs?

Tell us about your experience in Cambodia.

Thanks!

Kenjee

Hi Kenjee,

Insurance is dead money if nothing happens.  It isn't an investment.  Therefore , you want as many benefits as possible, paying the least amount of money as possible, by an insurer that will pay out claims (preferably the insurer should be regulated from a country which is well-regulated unlike Cambodia).

It would be my strong advise not to go for any local products by local providers.  You should be looking to get the same legal protections you would in Australia, Hong Kong or the European Union.

Going directly for small procedures and even medical check-outs is relatively cheap, so you should pay as little as possible, to get serious and potentially expensive medical bills paid.

Anyway, you can ask for a quote here - insuranceincambodia.com

Thanks,

For health insurance, agreed. Pay all the medical bills yourself, and choose an international insurance with high no-clims bonus and high deductibles, basically to cover the most serious of cases.

We're with Aetna, however, depending on age, family members etc. it makes sense to compare quotes from multiple companies. Make sure the policy covers outpatient treatment.

Disability insurance can also be useful. International companies can cover that as well.

Small scale stuff like fire, vehicle, theft, personal liability can all be insured by local companies. Read the T&C really well - some of them are ridiculous (for example fire insurance might not pay if you have no fire extinguisher in your house...)
