Mobile phone plans in Kenya

Cheryl

Hello everyone,

Staying connected while living in Kenya remains a priority for expats, especially when choosing a mobile operator or to understand the local specificities of mobile plans.

Here some elements to consider:

How to choose your mobile operator in Kenya?

What documents are required to subscribe to a mobile plan in Kenya?

What criteria should you consider when choosing a plan matching your needs?

Are e-sim cards a suitable option for expats? What are the conditions?

What are your local tips for saving money on your mobile plan, especially for international calls (apps, operators, etc.) or mobile data?

Feel free to share your experiences and advice to choose your mobile plan as an expat in Kenya.

Thank you for your contribution.

Hi everyone,

In Kenya Safaricom and Airtel are the 2 main providers of cell phone services. Airtel data is about half the cost of Safaricom. Safaricoms Mpesa a digital payment service on your phone is sometimes the only option to pay for some online things like a train ticket.

Hence use Airtel for data and calls and buy another sim card from Safaricom for Mpesa. When given a new sim card, remember to choose a number starting with 07 and NOT 01 as these new 01 number are not accepted in online government websites as a mobile number to get services like a driving licence etc. All the best.
