Experiences of single females living off compound.

SLM8

Hi, I will be interviewing for a teaching position at a Language Centre located in Riyadh. The package seems quite good but my concern is the accommodation - at first they led me to believe it would be on a compound but after questioning this they said it would be a small apartment in a building that is not on a compound. I would appreciate any comments / thoughts from people living in Riyadh especially any experiences from single females who have lived off compound. Thanks.

I can't share with you any experience, but I can tell something about the neighborhood in which the apartment building is in if you like?

Hello,
Welcome to Saudi Arabia.
From my previous experience I would say that living in a compound for a female western expat is much better than an appartement for the following reasons
1- Gated compound gives more secured spaces to live as you were in your home country.
2- provide transportation on daily basis to shopping malls which is great feature for a single female.
3- being in a community that share their living experience would help you a lot at the begging.
If you can negotiate this with the employer I think it would be much better

Wish you all the best!

Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated.

Hi. Not sure of the area, interview is tomorrow so I will be sure to ask where the apartment is located.

I am ready to help. If the housing is not a need to worry, you are safe inside the apartment. You must stick to me clothes that suit the general taste, I do not need to worry at all, it will be better than what they say

What I said is a living experience and has no relation to safety, Saudi Arabia very safe country but definitely there are culture differences the expat should expect and need to be ready for and that was my advise all about.

Hello,

Hope this message isn’t too late. If they try to tell you that everything is cheaper in Riyadh compared to other countries like UAE, it’s not. So negotiate as if you were looking for a job in UAE. If not more. Social liberty is very limited in Saudi. So be prepared for that. Compound rates in a good one start at 140k for single bed apartment. Quality of buildings outside a compound is mostly not that great unless you look for something in Damac towers. These apartments are equally high and if not more and makes no sense to pay that out with a compound. Hope this helps.
